208 3 Your money on "active service" What is the first duty of all who have control of money? The imperative duty of every one of us is to abstain from spending on anything that is not absolutely essential. Is it enough, then, to leave my money on deposit at the Bank? In the words of the Chancellor of the Exchequer "... those who invest directly with the State, and above all, those who do so for a long period, are the more likely to resist any temptation to turn their savings into active purchasing power.
