Before the war, few people outside the Services had heard of Naafi, though it had operated since 1921. Today Naafi is a familiar feature in the daily lives of millions of men and women at home, abroad, or in ships at sea. In four years, Naafi canteens have increased from 600 to 6,000 and its staff from 8,000 to over 80,000.
