marketings in the last fortnight of May is no doubt due to the fact that there are now fewer ewes than last year and consequently the crop of young lambs to draw from is less, whilst owing to the backward season the young lambs have not made the usual progress. It appears that the decline in the ewe population noted by the Livestock Policy Conference is continuing. 5. Pigs (a) The slaughterings of pigs in the 13 weeks since March 3rd, though less than in the corresponding period of 1940, indicate that the pig population will have declined by fully half a million or about 20% during this period.
