Berlin: Berlin and the EEC

A file containing documents concerning the relationship between West Berlin and the European Economic Community. Subjects covered in the file include the requirement to take the special status of Berlin into account in the planned introduction of a common European passport format; possible Soviet or East German refusals to accept such passports; and the possibility of Soviet objections to a meeting of the Social Affairs Committee in West Berlin. Other subjects discussed in the file include a visit to West Berlin by the secretary-general of the European Council, Franz Karasek; the referral of cases to the European Court of Justice by West Berlin courts; the planned appointment of a Berlin senator to deal with European affairs; and the inadvertent omission of a "Berlin clause" from the North East Atlantic Fisheries Convention, which required rectification in a low-key way in order to avoid Soviet and Eastern European protests.
