A file of memoranda and statistical reports concerning the deliberations of the Lord President's Committee on domestic affairs during the Second World War. The documents discuss plans for post-war reconstruction in the United Kingdom; the nationalisation of the coal-mining industry, the railways, and the gas and electricity supplies; government policies on transport and agriculture; housing, including rent controls and plans for satellite towns; and post-war international trade. Further documents include regular reports covering the status of stocks of food and animal feed in the United Kingdom; reports on the supply of food to the British zone of Germany; and discussions of the future of British Restaurants. Other subjects covered include the hill-farming industry in Scotland; post-war education policy; the supply of newsprint; unemployment statistics; war memorials; pensions; and the employment of German scientists in the United Kingdom. The file also includes a paper on the impact of the war on civilian consumption in the U.K., the U.S., and Canada.
