A file containing memoranda for meetings of the Lord President's Committee on domestic affairs during the Second World War. Topics discussed in the documents include conditions in Germany and German-occupied countries; the rationing and prices of meals in restaurants and hotels; issues of social welfare relating to pensions and allowances; and the creation of an industrial order of merit. Other topics covered include restrictions on the speed limits of vehicles and economies in the consumption of motor fuel; extensions to Double Summer Time; proposals for financially aiding the British film industry; the ratio of flour and its substitutes in bread production; and whether or not women in the workplace should be compelled to take up fire-watching duties. The committee also received regular memoranda detailing topics such as the situation of British overseas trade; the levels of reserve stocks of goods and materials; the general position of the British economy; and wage levels in various industries.
