GERMAN STRENGTH IN ITALY. THE SUB-COMMITTEE had before them a Minute by the Secretary (JIC/1481/43 dated 24th September, 1943) covering a Memorandum by the Chairman; also JIC/1498/43 dated 27th September, 1943, covering a Minute from the Director of Military Intelligence together with a draft telegram to J.S.M. Washington. A statement had appeared in a paper prepared by the Combined Intelligence Committee, and therefore presumably agreed to by the British Joint Intelligence Committee in Washington, which did not accord with the views expressed in J.I.C.(43) 324 of 3rd August, 1943, and in an appreciation by the J.I.C. of 14th September, 1943, conveyed to Washington in telegram No. FEUDAL 146. The divergence was an important one. The draft telegram prepared by the Director of Military Intelligence was intended to point out the divergence and to ask the British J.I.C. in Washington to bring it to the notice of the U.S. J.I.C. The draft telegram was amended in discussion. THE SUB-COMMITTEE:- Instructed the Secretary to despatch the telegram as amended.+ + Despatched as Feudal 152 - 28th September 1943. -2-
