Gas is a vast and growing service About one in every eight tons of coal mined in Great Britain goes to the making of gas and coke. In the ten years from 1938 to 1947, the coal carbonised by the Gas Industry went up by about 18%, and the total amount of gas sold increased by nearly 40%. GAS MAKES THE MOST OF BRITAIN'S WEALTH Of every 14 homes in Great Britain, at least 11 use gas for cooking, heating, water- heating or refrigeration. Between 1938 and 1947, the amount of gas consumed by British industry increased by no less than 70%.
