Motor-cars for Australia…mean meat for Britain

1 Jan 1946

WHAT EXPORTS MEAN TO US Motor-cars for Australia ... mean meat for Britain ... We need meat for our weekly ration. Australia needs motor-cars. One pay### for the other. That, broadly, is the y it works. We are a manufac- turing country, but we haven't the land to produce enough food for our population. So we buy food from abroad and pay for it by export- ing goods. During the war we got food on credit, but now we must export, even to get our present standard of rations. When the world food shortage has eased, the healthy export trade we are now trying to achieve will bring us our reward in full food shops again.
