258 FOOD THE SECRET OF MAKING IN 4 SIMPLE STEPS INGREDIENTS (for 4): 1 lb. stewing meat; 4 level tablespoons flour; 3 level teaspoons salt; 1/4 level teasp. pepper; 1 oz. dripping; 8 oz. onions, sliced; 8 oz. carrots and turnips, sliced; 3/4 pint vegetable stock or water. A GOOD STEW FACTS Mix the flour, salt and pepper together. Cut the meat in small pieces and coat with the flour mixture. This not only thickens the stew but keeps the juice inside the meat. Fry the floured meat in the drip- ping until it is a good brown colour; this makes gravy browning unnecessary.
