Report to the Nation No.23. How are we doing in 1948?

1 Jan 1948

389 REPORT TO THE NATION No. 23 THREE FACTS STAND OUT OUR ADVANCE HAS SLOWED DOWN In the three months March, April, May, 1948, the country's total production was one-fifth as much again as the average for the same months in 1946. Sounds good? Yes, but the big advance was made last autumn—and there has been no marked advance since. We've got to go on advancing, not dig ourselves in where we are now. WE HAVE FEW REINFORCEMENTS There are no untapped reserves of labour for industry. The chief way to increase production now is to increase the output of every single man and woman in industry.
