IF the next four million new homes to be built in Britain all had gas and coke heating, there would be an annual saving of 7,000,000 tons of coal. For the gas industry treats coal scien- tifically to produce gas, a fuel of constant quality and exact control, coke, a smokeless solid fuel of high efficiency, and indis- pensable by-products. The saving of coal by the gas industry is as high as 30 million tons a year. 389 Gas is a major weapon in British Industry's fight for output — speeding production, saving costs, reducing man-hours.
