WHAT EXPORTS MEAN TO US Sending out goods like these ... In this small island of ours we can never produce all the food and raw materials we need. We have to buy them from other countries. Then, of course, we have to pay the bill. To do this we must sell things overseas that we do produce in this island. Quite apart from paying current bills, the war has left us with a mountain of debt to pay off, before we can get straight. We must sell, therefore, to other countries as much as we can. Then we can pay for the food we urgently need and the raw materials for our factories, and so get back to a better standard of living.
