To balance our trade…we must build up exports

1 Jan 1946

WHAT EXPORTS MEAN TO US To balance our trade ... we must build up exports ... This is how our national house- keeping works. We have to buy from abroad much of our food and many raw materials. To pay for them we export goods to other countries. Now here is our problem. To win the war we sacrificed our overseas markets and investments. To win the battle of prosperity, we must restore, and increase, our vital export trade. Once we build up exports to balance imports we shall have a firm founda- tion on which to plan better times for everyone.
