Turn the gas down

1 Jan 1942

415 TURN THE GAS DOWN! Do you know that a gas ring turned on need- lessly for half-an-hour every day wastes 31/4 cwts. of coal a year? If we all use our gas more carefully, war production will benefit by hundreds of thousands of tons of coal in the vital year ahead. Never allow flames to lick the sides of a kettle or sauce- pan—the water won't boil any quicker and it wastes gas. Whenever possible, keep lids on saucepans to contain the heat. Cut down hot meals to a minimum, and go easy with the geyser.
