338 We need imported wheat for our bread. Before the war we used to get wheat in exchange for coal. If we had as much coal to export now as we had before the war it would be enough to pay for all the wheat we need to buy. We need sugar from abroad. If we could produce and export another million tons of steel it would pay for all the sugar we need to keep us on our present ration. We need meat and many other foods from America. Last year our total exports to that country were only just enough to pay for the tobacco we bought there.
