The Battle for Fuel Communique No 14

1 Jan 1942

Wise moves for Winter • Put fire bricks at sides and back of all open fires. This saves a lot of fuel without noticeably reducing the room temperature. • Use as little electricity as you can between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., because this is when war factories need it most. • Cover hot water tanks and adjoining hot pipes with old felt, thicknesses of newspaper or corrugated paper, lashed on with string or wire. This keeps the heat in and so saves fuel. • If your oven or boiler uses coal or coke, bank the fire up with slack.
