Report to the Nation No.1. £200 million overspent in 3 months

1 Jan 1947

367 Report No.1 THREE MINUTE to the NATION Every fortnight—pin it up and talk it over £200,000,000 overspent in 3 months In July, August and September we bought £513,000,000 of goods and sold only £313,000,000 to pay for them. That was our worst yet. It's exactly like a family spending £10 for every £6 it earns. This is the Balance of Payments Gap—the grave and threaten- ing problem that hangs over our country. We are living beyond our means. The American Loan stopped in August, and we are now using up our reserves (less than £600,000,000) of gold and dollars.
