From a doctor's DIARY "What has the Government done about V.D., doctor?" In the last war, the V.D. problem was even more serious than it is now. A Royal Commission, set up to study the problem, reported in 1916 that at least one person in every ten of the population in the large cities must have been infected with syphilis at some time in their lives; and at that time also a great physician, Sir William Osler, estimated that syphilis ranked third or fourth in the list of diseases that kill. This was an eye-opener.
