1. In two previous reports (S.F.C.(40)28 and S.F.C.(40) 66) the Scientific Committee on Food Policy have emphasised the importance of milk as a protective food, providing an essential part of the war-time diet and have suggested methods of maintaining supplies. 2. They have also welcomed as a most encouraging feature in the war-time dietary, the recent increase in the consumption of liquid milk to 85 million gallons per month, or approximately 11 million gallons more than before the war. They believe that this increase is an important factor in preventing a deterioration in national health despite some shortage of other foods.
