AN ESTIMATE OF THE NUMBERS OF LIVESTOCK WHICH CAN BE CARRIED IN THE UNITED KINGDOM NOW AND IN THE FUTURE. Memorandum by Professor Watson.

10 Dec 1940

(1) An estimate has been made of the numbers of stock which can be kept permanently in the United Kingdom on the produce of farms, after the ploughing of an additional 2 million acres of grassland for the crop of 1941, and assuming imports at 15 million tons. (2) Horses and dairy and other breeding cattle and those which will replace them have an absolute priority, the numbers existing on 4th June 1940 being kept up. (3) These animals can be fully maintained on home grown foods with the home produced oil seed cakes which are a bye-product of the vegetable oil industry.
