FERTILIZER REQUIREMENTS FOR 1945/46, 1946/47, 1947/48. Memorandum by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Secretary of State for Scotland And Minister of Home Secretary.

19 Mar 1945

R. T. J. H. M. 2. that, without increase in the subsidy element in their cost, farmers might be expected to purchase, and with this in mind, considerable cuts have been made in the theoretical requirements. Broadly speaking it may be taken that a ratio of 1 : 2 : 1 of nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash represents the balanced need for fertilisers in the United Kingdom, and that of these three, phosphoric acid is the determining factor. Bearing in mind the purchasing power of farmers and allowing for supply possibilities and manufacturing capacity in this country, we propose that for the three years now in question targets of 200,000 tons, 400,000 tons and 200,000 tons for nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash respectively should be aimed at.
