1. The Committee considered a memorandum by the Minister of Education (L.P.(44) 137) in which it was explained that, under Section 35 of the Education Act, 1944, the school leaving age would be raised from 14 to 15 on the 1st April, 1945, unless in the meantime the Minister had made an Order under Sub-section (3) of Section 108 retaining the age at 14. Before making an Order the Minister had to be satisfied that the step was necessary owing to the need for further time to make available the requisite supply of teachers or of school accommodation, and no Order could remain in force beyond 1st April, 1947.
