The Committee had under consideration a Memorandum by the Minister of Fuel and Power (L.P.(42) 234) of the giving an account of the present financial position and ing wage structure of the coal-mining industry, and recommend- ing that future price policy should be based on the following principles:- (i) A national credit balance of not less than 1/6d. a ton should be taken as a reasonable credit balance for the industry as a whole. (ii) Corresponding standard balances should be worked out for Districts and, if necessary, the Coal Charges Account should be used as machinery to enable these standard credit balances to be approximately maintained over a period.
