6. The total consumption of crude rubber in the manufacture of civilian tyres is 49,000 tons. It is hoped to save 8,000 tons by the two control schemes mentioned above, a further 8,000 tons by economy in manufacture and restriction of exports. A considerable further economy can be effected by increasing the pressure of tyres and reducing the speed of vehicles. 7. As regards commercial transport, arrangements are in hand for the rationalisation of retail distribution which should result in some saving in mileage and tyre consumption, although the amount cannot be estimated.
