A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include assessments of the possible German resistance to Operation Overlord; military situation assessments for the Eastern Front and South East Europe; a debate over whether to bomb Rome; the organisation and capabilities of the Polish and French resistance movements; the sharing of intelligence with the Soviet Union and United States of America; German secret weapons, including missiles and poison gas; Allied strategy and operations planning for the Pacific War; targets for aerial attack in the Balkans; and Axis oil shortages.
