A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include preparations for Operation Overlord, including assessments of German forces in France and the bombing of transport links; possible operations in Italy to prevent German forces being transferred to France, and planning for subsequent operations; possible German use of chemical weapons; the difficulties in persuading the Soviets to share information with their allies; planning for operations against Japan in the Pacific; the implications of developments on the Eastern Front for Overlord; the destruction of U-boat bases in liberated countries; and Japanese and German wartime economic problems.
