Practically the only relaxation left to the Japanese is to go from one "national restaurant" to the other, where they get one rice ball and a cup of sake for Yen 1.30 a time. Nevertheless health remains reasonably good (tuberculosis is said to be on the increase but I have seen no statistics to prove this) and there is as yet no question of starvation. The authorities are beginning to show concern at the threat of inflation. The note issue has increased from Yen 5,400,000,000 in June 1942 to Yen 13,700,000,000 in September 1944.
