Japanese Strategy in China Report by J.I.C.

1 Jun 1944

A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include Japanese strategy in China, and the consequent effects on Chinese politics; the effects of Allied bombing on the German war effort; Axis oil shortages; possible German use of chemical and biological weapons; targets for Allied aerial attacks; Japanese shipping losses; the consequences of a German withdrawal from the Balkans; press censorship and security for Operation Overlord; the consequences of a Finnish armistice with the Soviets; the treatment of Axis diplomats in liberated cities; and German responses to an Allied breakthrough in Italy.
