A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain’s intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC’s reports. Subjects covered in this file include the German war effort and capacity to continue fighting; the German withdrawal from France and the Balkans; German weapons development, including of the V-2 rocket; Axis oil supply problems; the likelihood of the Germans using chemical weapons; post-war defence planning, including the possibility of conflict with the Soviet Union; the deteriorating German military situation and the possibility of an internal German coup; the strengths and capabilities of the Soviet forces; and security arrangements for British intelligence officers in Europe.
