Possible German Intentions. Report by the J.I.C.

1 Sep 1939

Air Reconnaissances of British Coasts. 5. Throughout the month of November daily reconnaissances of the East Coast and of the North Sea have been carried out by German aircraft. These have extended from as far north as the Shetlands, (which have been visited about every third day) to the south of England. The bulk, however, have been to the south and have culminated in the latter half of the month in the mine laying operations in the shallow waters of the East Coast ports. The object of these reconnaissances is presumed to be:(a) To gain information of mercantile movements with a view to offensive action (including mine laying).
