Review of the United States Foreign Broadcast Information Service Contribution to the BBC Monitoring Service

15 Mar 1949

SECRET to improve the standards and quality of material received from F.B.I.S. The Americans were prepared to accept this arrangement. In connection with paragraph 16(e), the Committee agreed that the interim operation in Cyprus to produce Russian regional material, as outlined in paragraph 12, was acceptable provided the necessary funds were available. In discussion of the suggestion in paragraph 17 that a monitoring station should be established in the Himalayan area to intercept important broadcasting stations in Central Asia, the Service Departments were agreed that material obtained by such such a station would fill a dangerous gap in Russian coverage, and that the cost of such a project should be examined in detail by the B.B.C.
