Possibility of War Between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Report by the Joint Intelligence Committee

1 Jul 1949

TOP SECRET (d) In the unlikely event of open war between Afghanistan and Pakistan, it is probable that the Government of Pakistan as a member of the Commonwealth, would seek all possible assistance from His Majesty's Government especially in the provision of arms and equipment. Further, so long as Pakistan remains in the Commonwealth, Afghanistan must be aware that there is no hope of getting any military aid from Great Britain. Recommendations 3. We recommend that the Chiefs of Staff endorse this report as an expression of their views and forward copies to the Minister of Defence and, subject to his approval, to the Foreign Office and the Commonwealth Relations Office.
