A volume of meeting minutes of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. The JIC members discussed a vast range of international and domestic issues in their meetings. In this file, subjects documented include indications of Soviet preparedness for war; armistice negotiations and communist military dispositions in the Korean War; communist accusations that UN forces had used bacteriological weapons in North Korea; the progress of the First Indochina War; British intelligence organisation in the event of a major war; the provision of intelligence for NATO and Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE); information sharing with Sweden and Yugoslavia; political pressure for the reunification of Germany; the Anglo-Egyptian dispute over the Suez Canal zone; and tensions between Pakistan and India over Kashmir.
