A volume of meeting minutes of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. The JIC members discussed a vast range of international and domestic issues in their meetings. In this file, subjects documented include indications of Soviet preparedness for war; the use of atomic weapons in a future conflict; the progress of the Chinese Civil War; the threat posed by Chinese communists to Hong Kong and Taiwan; the encouragement and exploitation of defections from the Soviet bloc; the possibility of a Soviet invasion of Yugoslavia; Soviet policy regarding Berlin; aerial reconnaissance in Indochina, Turkey, and the Middle East; and arrangements for information sharing with NATO and the Commonwealth.
