243 FOREIGN ARMAMENTS. MEMORANDUM. GERMANY. Army. 1. German rearmament has continued throughout 1936: the peace-time strength of the Army has been increased and the rate of production of armaments has accelerated. German public men have recently stated with satisfaction that they now consider that the security of Germany against invasion is assured. As to the fact of the rearmament there is no concealment: as to the details there is still a great deal of secrecy. In August 1936, the period of conscript service was extended to two years and it is now announced that the peace-time strength of the German army is thirty-six infantry divisions, three armoured divisions and two independent brigades.
