A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on South-east Europe: that exceptional vigilance has been called for by Naval War Staff because of clear indications of imminent operations in the eastern Mediterranean, on June 10; of orders from Hitler for the transfer of a heavy Panzer unit from the west coast of France to Italy on June 2; Naval Headlines, covering that the light cruiser Nuernberg is to put into Gdynia for repairs, and the destroyers Friedrich Ihn and Theador Riedel are to enter Gdynia; that eighteen U-boats are on patrol in the Bay of Biscay, with three to be sent to the Channel; that the harbours of Castiglione and Portiglione are to be demolished, on June 9; that a Japanese naval force, possibly units of the 16th Cruiser Squadron, was attacked by Allied aircraft en route from the Sorong area to Manokwari; and that Japanese troops on Ponape in the eastern Carolines are down to 4 days' rations, subsisting on 30% rations, as of June 1; an assessment of the effect of food shortages on the Japanese population, from June 8; from the Japanese minister in Bucharest, regarding the internal situation and the effect of Allied air raids, during the month, on May 29; and from the Portuguese ambassador to the Vatican City, recording the German retreat from Rome, and that hostages were taken to Florence by the fascists, on June 6.
