A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: that the 26th Panzer Division withdraws to a new defence line by the morning of June 1; of the 29th Panzer Grenadier Division being unable to resist increasing Allied pressure because of heavy losses, on June 1; the 1st Parachute Corps reports Allied advances, on May 31, with further attacks expected on June 1; of Allied penetrations south of Albano, south-west of Valmontone and in the Frosinone area, on May 31; that the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division is to transfer to the area west of Piglio overnight on June 1/2; battle reports for 6 German divisions, for May 31; a detailed list of regimental and battalion commander casualties for all German units fighting in Italy as at May 26, sent from the Commander in Chief (C-in-C) for the South-west to German High Command in Berlin on May 27; that a German Air Force (GAF) fighter-bomber unit is to be deployed to Bihac in Yugoslavia on May 31 to attack guerrilla bands and to destroy the guerrilla airfield at Vis; and of German attempts to counter Allied low-altitude attacks against targets in Croatia, with airfield anti-aircraft artillery defences to be strengthened and all German personnel to carry rifles and ammunition and open fire against all low-flying hostile aircraft; on Western Europe: a report of May 30 from the C-in-C West on the state of defensive measures in anticipation of the expected opening of a second front, detailing the difficult transport situation and a shortage of construction material, the strike in Marseilles, that the 9th Panzer Division is preparing to move forward into position, evacuations, presumably of unreliable civilians, from France, Belgium and Holland, highlighting the numbers of males between 15 and 60 years of age being taken out, and progress in destruction of the likely landing areas, in mining and in the construction of defensive positions; and from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, telegram BJ 132013 which is not included.
