A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: that the 1st Parachute Corps is in command of the German reaction to Allied landings at Nettuno from January 22; that Allied forces had advanced to some 7 miles north-east of Nettuno by January 23, and that the Germans had destroyed all the bridges over the River Astura to halt their advance; that the Germans were aware that the Allies had landed in 4 waves between Formia and Minturno in the Gulf of Gaeta on January 23; that all German Air Force (GAF) ground attack aircraft operating against the Allied landing had been hit by very strong Allied anti-aircraft defence systems in the area; that 21 GAF bombers arrived in northern Italy from Belgrade on January 23; of GAF fighter units and supporting elements deploying to airfields north of Rome on January 22; and that the demolition of Civita Vecchia harbour was in progress on January 23.
