This file includes the following reports on France: of a German Army order of March 16 limiting parachute jumping and glider exercises to northern France so that they will be safe from Allied fighter attack; on the Russian Front: that Italian Air Force units are to be returned to Italy for refitting and reorganisation, on March 16; Naval Headlines; from the Japanese ambassador in Ankara, giving information obtained as of March 12 from the Finnish and Romanian attachés on relevant military strengths and losses of the German and Russian military forces, giving a very optimistic picture from the Axis viewpoint; and a report of March 13 on a deadlock since February 10 on negotiations between the U.K. and Turkey on British training and supply of equipment for the Turkish Army; from the Japanese ambassador in Vichy, a report of March 13 from a French source indicating that following further verbal attacks by Hitler against U.K. and U.S. Jews, the Germans obviously did not intend to make peace with the U.K. and U.S. in order to turn her whole strength against the Soviet Union; from the Japanese acting ambassador in Rome, a report of March 13 on the recent visits to Rome of Ribbentrop and Goering and also on the recent visit to the Vatican of Archbishop Spellman of New York; from the Turkish ambassador in Rome, a relay via Ankara on March 12 of a report from the Turkish ambassador in Bucharest on what he had learned from the Romanian Prime Minister (PM) on a recent visit by Ribbentrop to Rome; on Yugoslavia: a German situation report for March 17, noting occupation of the bauxite district, and a German liaison with Italian and Croatian divisions and also the Chetniks, probably all part of Operation WEISS; and a German situation report for March 15 on Operation WEISS, stating that German Air Force (GAF) air attacks are supporting Axis moves to secure the bauxite zone; on North Africa: of a German order of March 4 giving a very detailed list of questions to be asked when interrogating British naval prisoners; on the German secret service: a report from Algeciras to Madrid on March 11, that large-scale preparations for an Allied offensive against Rommel and Sicily continue; and of detailed sightings from Gibraltar; and a report from Lisbon to Paris and Madrid via Nauen on March 13, that the Allies intend to complete the African campaign by early May, after which they plan to invade Italy and southern France.
