This file includes the following reports on the Mediterranean/Southern Europe: that the German Air Force (GAF) in Sicily and the 6th Army are ordered to readiness 2, as of June 21; that the GAF are to take measures to prevent suspected acts of sabotage against aircraft on the ground, from June 20; that a GAF heavy fighter unit is to transfer to Pisa to protect the Italian fleet at Spezia, on June 20; and that an Axis supply ship hit by an Allied aircraft torpedo off Corsica was brought into harbour, on June 19; from the Portuguese ambassador in London, a report of June 20 concerning a British démarche on cooperation in the Azores - that if Portugal did not cooperate the Allies would occupy the Azores by force, hence she should bow to the inevitable and cooperate; from the Chinese minister to the Vatican, on developments in Italy including the evacuation of the families of the diplomatic corps, moves within Italy to cooperate with the Allies and crackdowns by the Italian police and the Fascist Party, on May 31; and from the Brazilian ambassador in Lisbon, on Portuguese policy regarding the war, which was pro-British but suspicious of American aims, and that Portugal also did not understand the South American role in the war, on June 18.
