British Society 1939-1951 provides access to thousands of documents from the collections of eleven U.K. government departments, each responsible for dealing with and reporting on the domestic situation in Britain during the Second World War and its aftermath. Its files document a wide variety of themes and topics relating to social, economic, political and cultural affairs, providing a uniquely comprehensive insight into civilian life across the country, and the everyday impacts of total war. Each collection contains the reports of government departments, the activities of local wartime organizations, and the voices and experiences of ordinary citizens living through the period.
