A file of correspondence and press material concerning the border between Hungary and Austria. The documents discuss the Hungarian government's renovation of the border controls between the two countries, removing the old "iron curtain" border fence, and constructing a new system of barbed wire fences around 1.5 kilometres inside the Hungarian border. The documents also cover the continued presence of Hungarian landmines along the Austrian-Hungarian border, despite the Hungarian government's previous assurance that they would be removed; and an incident in which a Hungarian landmine washed along a river into an Austrian village and exploded, killing one Austrian child and injuring two more, which led to "considerable public indignation" and an official protest from the Austrian ambassador to Hungary. Other documents in the file discuss the Austrian suspicion that East Germany has persuaded Hungary to tighten its border with Austria, in order to prevent East German nationals from using it to escape to the West.
