Northern (N): Bulgaria (NG). Political Relations: Ghana

1966

A file containing documents concerning Ghanaian diplomats in Bulgaria. Papers in the file include a report that the Ghanaian ambassador in Sofia had asked the United States representative there for dollars, as he had not been able to obtain sterling from the Ghanaian government since the breakdown of Anglo-Ghanaian relations. The report from the British embassy in Sofia notes that this probably resulted more from the overall state of the Ghanaian economy, as Anglo-Ghanaian trade had not been significantly affected by the diplomatic breakdown. It was also possible that disputes amongst the Ghanaian diplomats following a coup attempt in Ghana may have precipitated the request; and that the Bulgarian National Bank's refusal to issue him with sterling reflected the suspicions that Bulgaria still felt about the Ghanaian regime.
