Western (R): Germany (RG). Political Relations: GDR: Burma

1965

A file containing documents concerning relations between East Germany and Burma. Subjects covered in the file include a visit to Burma by a military delegation and Admiral Waldemar Verner, the Deputy Minister of Defence of East Germany. The delegation had visited military centres in Rangoon and the Burmese countryside, and had brought military supplies with them for the Burmese armed forces. The note reporting on the visit, sent from the British embassy in Rangoon, states that the delegation may not have been formally invited; that it was unlikely to lead to further arms sales or to the diplomatic recognition of East Germany by Burma; and that the overall purpose of the trip remained unclear.
