A file of correspondence and memoranda concerning the disposal of gold attributed to Albania. The gold was recovered from enemy forces following the end of the Second World War and attributed to Albania, but is claimed as compensation by Britain for losses incurred during an incident in the Corfu Channel in 1946, and by Italy following the nationalisation of the National Bank of Albania. The documents cover French proposals for the disposal of the gold, arguing that Italy has not yet legally established a claim, and that France cannot agree to the gold's distribution despite the willingness of the British to divide the assets. Further correspondence considers the legal implications of the case; the views of French and American representatives; and a decision by the International Court of Justice, which argues that it is unable to adjudicate on the Italian claims in the absence of Albanian intervention.
