Western (W): General (W). Political Relations between GDR and Other Countries: Ghana

1960

A file of correspondence, reports, and press material concerning relations between East Germany and Ghana. The documents contain a report produced by the British Military Government in West Berlin on recent attempts by the East German government to increase its influence in Ghana. The report covers a number of visits to Ghana by East German political and industrial delegations; and how Patrick Nkrumah, the Ghanaian leader, has "adopted a firm line against according any form of diplomatic recognition to the DDR". Other documents include a copy of a joint declaration published by the East German Free German Youth and the Ghanaian Trade Union Congress; and an article in Neues Deutschland promoting the existence of close ties between East German and Ghanaian women's organisations. The documents also discuss a visit to East Berlin by a delegation of Ghanaian politicians.
