Northern (N): Soviet Union (NS). Jews of Soviet Union

1959

A file of correspondence, memoranda, and press material concerning Jews in the Soviet Union. The documents contain a memorandum handed to Anastas Mikoyan, the First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union, by the Anglo-Jewish Association, protesting a rumour that the Soviet government is forcing Jews to resettle in the "Autonomous Jewish Region" in the Soviet Far East. The documents also discuss a question from Barnett Janner, a Labour Member of Parliament and president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, regarding whether Harold Macmillan, the British prime minister, discussed the situation faced by Jews in the Soviet Union during his recent visit to Moscow; and the response of the British government that Macmillan did ask Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet leader, about Jewish life in the Soviet Union. Other documents include an article in the Jewish Chronicle estimating the Jewish population in the Soviet Union.
