A file containing documents relating to Soviet-Nigerian relations. Subjects discussed in the file include guidance to be given to Nigerian regional representatives, in advance of Nigeria gaining its independence, about the handling of social invitations from Soviet and satellite state diplomatic representatives; and the British concern that such invitations would be used to gain intelligence which could be used against Nigerian and British interests in the future. Documents in the file include the Foreign Office letter outlining the ways in which Soviet diplomatic receptions and other events were used to gather information; the response from the Colonial Office noting that the Nigerian government had issued guidance to its posts abroad based on the Foreign Office advice; and a copy of that advice.
