German Democratic Republic (GDR): Visa Policy Concerning the UK and German Democratic Republic: Including UK Visa Policy and Practices in Eastern Europe and Proposed UK/GDR Visa Agreement

1 Jan 1982

A file of correspondence and reports concerning visa policies for East German visitors wishing to visit the United Kingdom. The documents cover discussions on a review of current procedures for Eastern European applications; and whether a proposed visa agreement between the U.K. and East Germany may become a subject of talks during a visit to Britain by the East German deputy foreign minister, Kurt Nier. Other documents in the file include monthly lists of East German visa applications; complaints from academics over the inability of East German visitors to secure exit visas; and a request that visa applications for East German visitors on cultural trips be monitored. The file also includes a complaint from the British Council of Churches over current British visa policies and procedures; and a complaint issued against the East German embassy in London after the child of a diplomat was charged a fee.
